Resilience Circles
In late November, 2017, Resilience launched its first in a series of small group conversations on specific topics that will allow staff, faculty and students to find ways to grow through what they go through. Challenges in our personal and professional lives are often stressful, painful, and traumatic. At the same time, these experiences can inspire growth and personal development. The groups are designed to:
- Provide a small group format (up to 12 participants) for Georgia Tech faculty and staff to share, listen, and process their resilience-building experiences with other members of the GT community.
- Enable sharing of resilience-building strategies and resources among the participants.
- Give participants a place to encourage, inspire, and lift each other up.
- Sessions were supported by a social worker from the Metro Atlanta Counseling Center

Rising Strong Dialogues
On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, Resilience hosted 3 powerful dialogues (one early, one mid-day, and the third late afternoon). The Rising Strong Dialogues were co-facilitated by Cheryl Cofield and Pearl Alexander, Certified Daring Way Facilitators® and members of Institute Diversity.
This 90-minute dialogue, explored our existing challenges through the metaphor of the "Arena." We discovered what it means to be in the arena having a “face-down” moment. Participants experienced the Rising Strong® process for resilience and rising from a face-down moment by owning your most difficult stories.
Based on the research of Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW, participants learned techniques to improve their emotional fluency and those around them during the height of such difficulties. They learned how to articulate their needs, set boundaries, reach out for support, and integrate insights from these stories into your identity.

RESILIENCE’s First Learning Session: "Keys to Building Your Resilience"
“Life is full of changes and challenges. Sometimes these are fun, and sometimes they can be extremely stressful. Your resilience – the ability to maintain or recover high levels of well-being during high levels of turbulence – is one of your most valuable assets in life. Research and experience have helped us identify a set of 'change muscles' that enable you to deal effectively with adversity," said Linda Hoopes, Ph.D., presenter of RESILIENCE's first workshop, “Keys to Building Your Resilience.” Hoopes is an industrial/organizational psychologist and president and CEO of Resilience Alliance, LLC. She is the author of Managing Change with Personal Resilience, which was shared with a few lucky participants.
